Week 18

IMG_5428

Last Friday (the 19) Sabine turned four months old. That also happened to be the day she learned to roll over intentionally. She is now quite proficient at swinging her legs up and over to heave herself from her back to her stomach. While she is very proud of this new skill and does it repeatedly, she still hates tummy time. I don’t think she’s quite figured out yet that rolling over from her back will inevitably lead to tummy time. Next up, learning to roll from front to back!

As another milestone, we gave Sabine her first rice cereal mixed in her regular bottle last Wednesday. For some babies, apparently the weight of the cereal helps keep the reflux at bay. She seemed to do well, she chugged her bottle as usual and the reflux seemed mildly better. But then she had a serious choking fit on Friday night that scared me (and her) half to death, so we nixed cereal for now. We’re back to the medicine for dealing with the reflux.

Sabine has also developed a very poignant frustration scream. It’s nice to know she’s not in pain so much as just pissed off sometimes, but it’s still pretty noisy. We keep telling her it’s all part of the learning process, since she seems to do it the most when she’s eyeballing a toy that’s just out of reach. We’re hoping it’ll inspire her to get moving; we’re pretty sure she’s going to really enjoy mobility. (We’re also thinking we need to start childproofing the house here pretty soon.)

Thanks, RS, for the frog! The eyeballs are the perfect size for gumming.

Four Months!

Well, technically Sabine won't be four months old until this Friday. But she had her four-month appointment last Friday. She has grown quite a bit, she's now 24.25 inches long, which puts her in the 58th percentile, although she weighs only 11 lbs 13 oz., which is less than I was expecting. (That puts her in the 18th percentile for weight.) She's definitely been growing, we can feel it when we pick her up, and she's definitely a lot stronger, she's getting close to being able to hold herself up in a seated position.

I think she hasn't gained as much weight because of her reflux. A lot of her meals are still coming back up. We're hoping she'll start to outgrow this issue in the next couple of months, and the pediatrician upped her medicine dosage a little in the meantime.

She also is showing definite preference for a particular toy. Puppy is getting a lot of love (and slobber) these days. Puppy is a little...crustier than he was when we originally got him.

Sabine also got another round of vaccines at this doctor's visit, so Friday afternoon was pretty rough. (As much for me as for the little one, I think. I'm kind of a pansy when it comes to seeing my little girl get poked with needles.) Fortunately she woke up on Saturday in a much better mood, and we even made it out to Nana Lin's house for a change of scenery this weekend.

Dustin and I also went out on our first date since Sabine was born, on Saturday night. We saw Avatar in the theater. It was really nice to get out of the house and reconnect without any interruptions for a desperate search for a burp cloth/bib/pacifier. But we were both very happy to come home and peek in on a sleeping Sabine, especially since we were both a little cross-eyed from sitting three rows back with the 3-D glasses for two and a half hours.

Happy Valentine's Day!

I was trying to get a good picture of this darling dress from CCC, so even I got in on the action.

Sabine has also started showing some interest in her toys. They don't hold her attention for long, but so far she has enjoyed drooling on all the different textures. This panda bear is particularly soft. Much thanks to our favorite editor ever, and quilter extraordiaire, for this wonderful stuffed animal.

P.S. Tummy time is going much better these days.
